What is a feasibility report used for?
So, Ideas are being generated every second. In fact, every day, millions of ideas are created and destroyed. Well, not in a physical sense but at least in your head.
But the Problem is that not every idea is successful. Only great ideas achieve its objective.
So how do you differentiate a great idea form a good idea? Well, the answer lies in feasibility report.
Feasibility means how easily or practically; a task can be performed. Basically, it tells how an idea is capable of achieving its objective.
Remember the words possible and practical are key here.
In short, through feasibility report, management wants to know whether the imagined task can be done or not?
I mean just like Bob. You know, Bob is a senior analyst for a fortune 500 company, and he’s been asked to write a feasibility report. And, He is stuck in a difficult situation.
His CEO is considering an idea, of moving their manufacturing unit to a new location. And management want to know if this idea will work or not.
But the problem is that Bob has never written a feasibility report before. In fact, he’s not even completely sure what it is! . Also, he is not having any feasibility report of a business as a sample to start with.

How do you write a feasibility report?
So bob needs to draft the feasibility report from scratch.
To make the Bob’s life more difficult, the CEO of the company wants the feasibility report as soon as possible
Poor bob, not even sure what goes into a feasibility report.
So, to help out our dear friend bob, let’s take a closer look, at how to write a feasibility report? What are the contents of feasibility report and how to organise the report?
Like most formal reports, a feasibility report includes some specific sections. Usually, it has five sections. That is introduction, Background, requirements, Evaluation, and conclusion.
Contents of a feasibility report – Section-1 : Introduction
So, the First section is the introduction. Here, bob will need to introduce the problem and proposed solutions in detail.
Also, this section can be broken down into three parts, that is Executive summary, Problem statement & Solution.
Bob can prepare this section by discussing the rising cost of manufacturing at the current location. Then bob can explain the benefits of moving the manufacturing operation to a new location.
Contents of a feasibility report – Section-2 : Background
The second section is for Background. The background of the scenario is very important for the management, to have an overall view and take decisions. This is the very obvious expectation for a company board to consider new initiatives. Bob will need to provide all important contextual information.
This could include an overview of the company’s operations and Vision. The history of the problem and other important information needs to be understood, before making a decision on whether something is feasible or not.
Also, this section can be broken down into four parts. That is the History or Context of the problem, Technology Considerations, Product or Service market, and Market positioning strategy.
For Bob’s report, He might want to include information about the current market competition, Technological advancements, and the recent rise in manufacturing costs. Also, he will need to provide the details of what goes into moving manufacturing equipment, as well as information about the new location.
Contents of a feasibility report – Section-3 : Requirements
The third section is about requirements. It is also sometimes called the criteria section because it includes descriptions of how the writer is evaluating, the feasibility of the proposed solution.
Also, this section can be broken down into four parts. That is Assumption & Constraints, Human Resources & Staffing, Schedule, and Financial projections.
Here bob might say that he is evaluating the reallocation, based on cost, environmental impact, taxes, and other important criteria. Also, he will need to explain the possible issues related to moving sites.

Contents of a feasibility report – Section- 4 : Evaluation or feasibility study
The fourth section is about the Evaluation or feasibility study.
So, what is a feasibility study?
Well, a Feasibility study is an assessment of the proposed idea. It analyses the practicality of a proposed idea and assesses how likely the project is going to succeed.
This section is for identifying key goals, and relevant factors and examining the market research, for the successful execution of the project.
I would call it the most important part of any feasibility report. The feasibility study helps management, to make better-informed decisions. Basically, this is the deciding factor, regarding which projects get funded, or which one get scrapped.
This section should also explain the assessment of other options. Also, this is the right place to discuss the risk assessment of viable options.
Remember, this section is to provide the details of the results and outcomes of research done while exploring the proposed ideas.
So, for the evaluation section, Bob will want to compare the current solution to the proposed solution. He can discuss the current solutions to the rising manufacturing cost. Bob will want to compare results, based on each requirement outlined before.

What is a feasibility report ?
Well, a feasibility report is a paper that examines a proposed solution and evaluates whether the idea is possible under certain constraints or not.
These constraints could be anything. It could be financial, social, practical, environmental, technical, legal, or any other things
Basically, anything that could make that idea impossible or impractical for a solution to be implemented.
Feasibility report is written with the purpose to determine if a planned action is viable and will it meet the goals of the organization?
For bob’s example, in moving manufacturing site, the CEO hopes to save money for the company. But is it a good idea? The move could cost lot of money to company. This may cut the expected savings. In addition, there could be environmental concerns like displacing wildlife or even local population. Also, there could be an issue of tax breaks.
All these if and buts needs to be analysed and reported, to prove the feasibility of the idea.
Contents of a feasibility report – Section- 5 : Conclusion
The fifth one is conclusions. Next, bob will want to sum up the conclusions he’s reached about the proposed solution of moving the manufacturing division. He can reiterate the pros and cons of the solution. This section, also called the final opinion section, includes Bob’s recommendation of whether the solution is feasible or not.
Content Requirements for Sample Feasibility Report
The content of the sample feasibility report is formatted and structured according to a range of requirements which may vary from organization to organization. Meanwhile, there are common suggestions, which are listed below.
- Front Matter
To begin with, writing a sample feasibility report, first, you need to create a title page that provides a descriptive yet concise title, your (i.e. author’s) name, email, job position, and also the organization for which you’re writing the report. Next, you must include an itemized list of contents that provides headings and sub-headings sequenced the same way as they are structured in the report body. Also add a list of all material (tables, figures, illustrations, annexes) used within the doc. Remember that the title page shouldn’t be numbered and that no more than 4-5 pages should be dedicated to the front matter.
- Report Body Format
Because there are many different styles and requirements for formatting the body of the feasibility study report, it may be difficult for you to select the right format for your report, so I suggest you discuss this issue with your curator or supervisor who should provide you with the right styling and format requirements.
Meanwhile, there are several common suggestions as follows:
-
- Each page of the report body needs to include a descriptive header with an abbreviated title for the report, the author’s name, and the page number (at the right top)
- Structure the report by headings and sub-headings and indicate this structure within the document content
- Make sure headings are properly formatted (i.e., flush left, indented, etc.) on each page
- Use the same style for headings throughout the entire report template
- Never use the too larger or too small font (font should have a professional look, 10-12 points)
- Use the same citation style (e.g., CBE, APA, etc.) for formatting sources used in your feasibility study template
- Report Template Sections
The following list provides an outline of the key sections to be included in the report content:
-
- Executive Summary – a description of the problem/opportunity highlighted in the study, the purpose of the report, and the importance of the research for your target audience
- Background – a more detailed description of the feasibility study, who it was carried out, and whether it was implemented elsewhere
- Analysis – an examination and evaluation method employed in conducting your feasibility study
- Alternatives and Options – an overview of any alternative proposals or options and their features in comparison to the main proposal of the study
- Cost-Benefit Evaluation – a rigorous analysis method that was implemented to examine and evaluate the main proposal for cost-benefit effectiveness and to demonstrate the tech feasibility, economic practicality, social desirability, and eco-soundness of the proposal.
- Conclusion – a summary of the work done and your own conclusions regarding your analysis
- Recommendations – a series of recommendations practices and follow-up actions based on your conclusions
- References
One last thing you need to consider when writing your feasibility study report template is that the report should include a Reference page that lists all reference material (articles, books, web pages, periodicals, reports, etc.) cited in your document. This page should be styled appropriately.
Additionally, you can create an Appendix page that provides detailed discussions of all criteria used in analyzing feasibility and examples of each criterion. This page should also be styled appropriately

Conclusion
By now, of course, the recommendation should be pretty obvious based on the past few sections, but this is where bob will explicitly state whether or not he thinks the move is a good idea and why.
Good ideas come along all the time and help people to solve problems in their daily life whether it’s their sweet home or at work. Every idea results in a project, which helps the world to provide unique products or services.
But Great ideas appear a little less frequently and require a lot more work. Great ideas are usually identified through a feasibility study or report.
The challenge is generating a good feasibility report is not an easy task. The core, is freeing yourself from the conventional and mundane thought process that occupies most of your time. Since every good idea is unique, it requires a specific approach to find the potential for project success.
